Our Car Nearly Burned Down!
A fuse box failure melted the plastic box and Oure Car Nearly Burned Down!
Henry and Irene have been living off grid full time since 2005 on a 43 acre off grid homestead in the high desert of Northern Arizona. Situated at 5280′ elevation, we enjoy four seasons of beautiful scenery and weather about 60 miles south of the Grand Canyon.
We grow most of our green beans, peppers, yellow beans, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, squash, garlic, and herbs. Specialty crops like asparagus, sun chokes, and lavender are supplemented by foraged foods including wild ground cherries, prickly pear, and other native plants.
Electricity is made using solar panels and one 400W wind generator. We power our buildings in two groups: Irene's studio by itself, and house infrastructure: house, greenhouse, and workshops.
Thanks for joining us on our continuing journey.
Take care.

      Hey there! Yeah, hot hot hot! It would sn’t unusual to be in the 90s, but for the last 6-7 years we’re having 100+ degree days for weeks on end. It is s all part of the migration of warmer temperatures to more northern areas. We out there mini-split A/C in the bedroom about 8 years ago to provide some relief for what was perhaps a week of 100+ days. Now we have many more days over one hundred. Makes new challenges 😟🤔. Hope you and your family are doing well. Are you still in the UK? Take care:

    It's nice that you are able to freeze dry leftovers like your roast beef and have for a meal at a much later date. It's not going to waste or in the freezer with a shorter storage life. You are saving yourself a lot of money. Have a wonderful day and thanks for sharing.

    • @BrainStormAcres
      @BrainStormAcres 6 днів тому

      Hey Bryan, food storage is always a tricky thing. We had wanted a freeze drier for years, but we had other ways to deal with short and medium storage. What sold us is the ability to have a complete meal in little time when traveling. Commercial freeze dried foods are way too expensive on a per serving basis. Now I can cook much larger amounts with a specific plan to freeze dry most of it. Roasting 9 lb of eye of round takes about the same time as roasting half that. Before, my only preservation technique was to freeze leftovers. Now we mostly don’t have leftovers in the older sense. Instead we plan two uses - freshly cooked food and freeze dried food. I spend time portioning the larger portions I cook, but it’s all at one time with no spoilage! Thanks for your comments. Take care.

    It's mind boggling the lack of logical thinking of so many people that we have to deal with in these types of situations. Like I tell my wife all the time. I hate trying to deal with stupid people 😡. We had a rural route address when I was growing up. It wasn't out in the middle of nowhere. It was on a main highway in the country, but still had a rural route address. They changed it after I left home and actually gave out street or highway addresses with box numbers. I hope everything is taken care of with this situation. I know you said you think everything is worked out. But I wouldn't hold your breath. I had to laugh when you talked about being naked and going outside to check on chickens and such. I'm always taking our blind dog Salina out to potty almost every day in nothing but my underwear 🩲 😂 Have a wonderful day and stay cool the best you can.

    The USPS is trying to have Sacramento as the post office our mail goes to first and they sort it. That’s with a major hub in Las Vegas. But the USPS is crazy. When we lived in Wrightwood, CA we had a post office in town, and we had to get a post box from them. But they don’t have enough boxes for everyone. We got lucky and just took over Mark’s mom’s box. The UPS, FedEx, and any other delivery either will drop off your stuff, tell you, you don’t exist, or will drop it off at the post office. If the UPS or FedEx doesn’t feel like delivering it to you, they will just leave it at the post office. When I bought a batch of supplies from one company, they had the same problem, our address didn’t exist. I ended up talking to the owner who over rid the system and shipped the order. It arrived at our house about a week later. The box was damaged but everything inside was fine. Hen Mark has to ship a gun, it has to go through FedEx. There is one office in town and they have funny hours. So we understand your problems.

    Very informative. I have a PO box in Ash Fork. Once I figured out how the deliveries work, no problems. Fed Ex did deliver to my property but it took three attemps to make it happen. I'm wondering if they gave into you on the machine for fear you would sue them for discrimination. Several Insurance companies won't insure your car unless you have a sticks and bricks. Don't forget to breathe.😊

    • @BrainStormAcres
      @BrainStormAcres 6 днів тому

      Sue for discrimination. Hmm, might be their motivation. I’m sure the doc saying this is a life threatening condition played into it too. We’ve had packages delivered in town since we moved here. First was a local mail and shipping service which we used until it closed. Then the Mobil station until it burned. Now the corral market. There people who meet FedEx ad UPS at the end of the pavement. They both used to go into the ranch roads, but most drives on the JWR side won’t do it anymore. Thanks for commenting. Take care.

      It is very tasty Jan. There is hardly any garlic in the dish - no garlic taste that most people can tell. Generally, the cayenne overpowers the garlic Ang the garlic taste is masked by the green chili. Thanks for commenting. Have a great week. Take care.

      Hiya Jan. That’s the end result for footage for the trip to California - I lost a lot when the camera failed to save the files correctly 😟. The spaceX launch had some noise that made an impression but wasn’t strong enough to keep in the show. We heard but did not see the re-entry of the booster returning to Vandenberg. We had several new experiences! Take care.

      It’s funny how some places do n’t seem to change much. Solvang looks about the same, but the bakery clerks were pretty lacking in knowing what ingredients were in the baked goods. Still, a fun visit. Have a great weekend! Take care friend.

      Our anniversary was relaxing with our daughter and her partner. Jennifer chose a fantastic selection of cheeses. The Bleu cheese was delicious. Champaign was delicious too. We haven’t let Rufous off his leash in public until this visit to a dog friendly beach. Rufous did great - he mostly came when called. He had a very be fast dog when he decides to run hard. Rattlesnakes. That is the only one we’ve seen in our fenced yard in 20 years. We’ve seen two others in other places on our homestead. Have a fantastic weekend Jan. Take care friend.

    I thought for a minute you guys had gone too England!! LOL!! Nothing wrong with a good dose of the beach!! Look at Rufus all muddy and wet and socialising!! Looks like he had a good time!! I live on a coastal town!! But its still like a good 40 minutes to the beach!! Hard if you have no transport and your day to day life routine just gets in the way!! But yeah nothing like that sea air hey??

    • @BrainStormAcres
      @BrainStormAcres 16 днів тому

      Go to England? Fabulous idea! 40 minutes to the beach … I wish! A minimum amount for 400 miles to the ocean from here. We try to take advantage when we’re near the ocean. We live San Luis Obispo California where our daughter lives. It’s way too expensive to move back now. We left California 18 years ago to save money. Rufous had such a good time. Running with other dogs, including Gus, our daughter’s rat terrier. He slept very well! Have a great weekend. Take care.
